Central Philippine University (CPU) celebrates a significant milestone for research, development, and innovation as technologies arising from its Philippine Native Chicken Research and Development initiatives demonstrate how university-generated knowledge can move beyond research laboratories and publications to create tangible impact in the industry. The Philippine Native Chicken initiative of Golden Sprout Corp. emerged as one of the five winners of the 2026 Presidential Filipinnovation Awards National Competition, besting a field of 16 finalists nationwide. This recognition highlights the value of sustained scientific research in addressing real challenges confronting the Philippine native chicken industry. For years, CPU researchers have worked on strengthening the scientific foundation of native chicken productionโfrom breeding and production technologies to feeds, nutrition, health management, and other interventions designed to improve productivity while preserving the unique qualities of Philippine native chicken. These research efforts have helped generate knowledge, technologies, and products that can be translated into practical solutions for raisers, farmers, entrepreneurs, and other industry stakeholders. What makes this achievement particularly meaningful is the journey from research to utilization. Scientific findings were not intended to remain on paper. Research results became the basis for developing and improving technologies and products that respond to actual production needs. Through continued R&D, validation, refinement, and industry application, scientific innovation has helped create opportunities for more productive and sustainable native chicken enterprises. This demonstrates the important role of universities such as CPU in the national innovation ecosystem. Research creates knowledge, but its greater value is realized when that knowledge is translated into technologies, products, enterprises, and solutions that reach communities and industries. For CPU, this achievement also embodies the University's RDE direction of CREATE โ PROTECT โ UTILIZE: creating knowledge and technologies through research, protecting valuable intellectual assets, and ultimately facilitating their utilization for economic and societal benefit. The recognition is therefore more than an award for an innovation. It is an affirmation of what sustained university R&D can accomplish when science is connected with entrepreneurship, commercialization, and the needs of industry. As CPU continues to strengthen its RDE ecosystem, this milestone challenges our researchers to look beyond the completion of a research project and ask: Where can our research go next? Who can benefit from it? Can it become a technology, a product, a startup or spin-off, or an industry solution? The journey of CPU's Philippine Native Chicken R&D shows that research can grow into innovationโand innovation can grow into impact. Congratulations to everyone, especially to Jaime Cabarles Jr. , Program Leader of CPU Philippine Native Chicken R and D, and also Dean of the College of Agriculture, Resources, and Environmental Sciences, whose research, technical work, innovation, and commitment over the years contributed to the development of CPU's Philippine Native Chicken R&D. This two-day intensive workshop gathers technology transfer teams from 27 HEIRIT universities nationwide for hands-on proposal drafting, expert critique, and mock technical panel pitching โ all geared toward finalizing technology commercialization proposals for DOST-PCIEERD's IMPACT grant program.
