Journalists from social and humanities sciences play a decisive role in decentralizing Western perspectives, spreading diverse cultural and intellectual views, and contributing to a more inclusive global discourse, noted Reysa Alenzuela (Central Philippine University (Iloilo City, Philippines) in her report. This study examines the journal of the Eastern Institute of the Czech Academy of Sciences, which is dedicated to the studies of Asia, North Africa, and the Middle East. Through thematic analysis, this study conducted a descriptive analysis of the topics, geographical coverage, and author affiliations. The analysis showed a consistent multidisciplinary profile. The thematic representation indicates a broader representation that reflects significant thematic diversity. The authorship data indicate that, although mostly European scientists, the journal has an international reach and opportunities for broader global inclusivity. The citation characteristics emphasize that the most influential articles are dedicated to culturally and socially-religious significant topics, while works with fewer citations represent significant but minor contributions in specialized fields. This study emphasizes the role of library and information sciences (LIS) in decentralizing Western scientific dominance, supporting diverse knowledge systems, and improving the accessibility of underrepresented regional studies. A humble herb, a two-front metabolic defense. A peer-reviewed study finds that the dietary fiber in lemongrass, a common Filipino kitchen herb, ferments in the gut into propionate, a compound that mildly blocks two enzymes driving high blood sugar and high cholesterol, and even outperformed standard drugs at lowering cholesterol in an animal model. What the study found: Lemongrass is rich in dietary fiber. Two-thirds (65.68%) of lemongrass by dry weight is dietary fiber, mostly insoluble. Fermentation yields propionate. Gut fermentation of the fiber produced propionate as its dominant short-chain fatty acid; acetate and butyrate were undetected. It mildly blocks a blood-sugar enzyme. The propionate isolate inhibited alpha-amylase by 20.43%, slowing the breakdown of starch into sugar. It also blocks a cholesterol enzyme. The isolate inhibited HMG-CoA reductase by 13.11%, the same rate-limiting enzyme targeted by statin drugs. In rats, it beat the reference drugs. Rats fed the fiber showed the greatest drop in total cholesterol, outperforming the Acarbose plus Pravastatin drug combination. This is the first study to examine lemongrass dietary fiber and its fermentation products for diabetes and heart-disease risk. The takeaway is clear: lemongrass dietary fiber, through its fermentation product propionate, works on two fronts at once, taming blood sugar and cholesterol, making this everyday herb a strong candidate for future functional foods. Central Philippine University (CPU), through the CPUGAD Technology Business Incubator (CPUGAD TBI), strengthened its innovation partnership with Filamer Christian University (FCU) through the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding on September 25, 2026, at CPU. The partnership forms part of NEST Connect, CPUGAD TBI’s platform for strengthening collaboration and strategic networking among higher education institutions (HEIs) in Western Visayas and beyond, with particular emphasis on building stronger innovation linkages among the region’s private HEIs. NEST Connect creates opportunities for institutions to work together in startup development, technology commercialization, research collaboration, capacity development, and entrepreneurial education. Through the program, CPU envisions a more connected innovation ecosystem where private HEIs can co-create solutions, share knowledge and resources, jointly develop institutional capabilities, co-incubate startups and research-based spin-offs, and create pathways for technologies and innovations to reach communities and markets. The SILLAG Region 1 Startup Consortium benchmarked Western Visayas’ innovation and startup ecosystem on September 22–23, 2026, gaining insights on technology transfer, innovation management, and startup support mechanisms relevant to strengthening Region 1's ecosystem. The activity began at the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) Western Visayas, where Regional Director Engr. Rowen R. Gelonga welcomed the delegation and facilitated discussions on the region’s innovative startup ecosystem and best practices. Engr. Gelonga emphasized the need to strengthen the startup ecosystem as a pathway for translating R&D investments into technologies that benefit society and the economy, create jobs, and support businesses and industries. DOST Western Visayas shared its technology transfer and commercialization practices, including the initiatives of its Innovation Management Unit in supporting researchers and startups, as well as regional innovation hubs and initiatives. On the second day, the delegation visited the UMWAD Western Visayas Consortium at Iloilo Science and Technology University (ISATU), where it was welcomed by Dr. Raul F. Muyong, Assistant to the University President for Governance, Advocacy, and Quality Assurance. Dr. Carmelo V. Ambut, ISATU Vice President for Research and Extension and UMWAD Western Visayas Executive Director, led the presentation on UMWAD’s programs, initiatives, and best practices. He emphasized the importance of collaboration and bringing ecosystem stakeholders together to strengthen the region’s innovation and startup ecosystem. The delegation also benchmarked the Central Philippine University Pugad Technology Business Incubator (CPUGAD TBI). Project Leader Gelvie C. Lagos and General Manager Mark Gil D. Peraman welcomed the delegation and shared the TBI’s programs and best practices in startup support. The benchmarking activity was led by Engr. Arnold C. Santos, SILLAG Region 1 Project Leader, who expressed appreciation to DOST Western Visayas and UMWAD for welcoming the delegation and sharing Western Visayas’ best practices in startup development to help strengthen the Region 1 startup ecosystem. Also part of the delegation were Mr. Racky D. Doctor, Governing Council Member; Prof. Armie C. Sabugo, Co-Implementer from Mariano Marcos State University; and Engr. Roy R. Flores, PSU Aligwas TBI Core Member from Pangasinan State University, along with project assistants from the consortium and participating TBIs.
