A recent study of 33 junkshops across Iloilo City reveals that these often-overlooked operations recover over 1,580 metric tons of recyclables every single month. It is turning trash into treasure, livelihoods, and a cleaner city.
From ferrous metals to HDPE plastics, these unsung heroes of the circular economy divert over a tenth of the city's daily waste from landfills. But here's the catch: most remain informal and unrecognized in the official waste management system.
It's time to recognize, support, and integrate them as true partners for a sustainable Iloilo City.
