It's not just trash. It's a warning sign.

A recent study of sediment samples from the Calajunan Sanitary Landfill in Iloilo City uncovered a diverse community of bacteria, including many strains resistant to common antibiotics. With 489 bacterial isolates identified and a Multiple Antibiotic Resistance (MAR) Index ranging from 0.1 to 0.8, the findings point to a growing threat that connects waste, wildlife, and human health.

This is a One Health issue because the health of people, animals, and the environment is deeply interconnected.

While the study didn't test humans or animals directly, the presence of these bacteria in our landfill is a clear signal. How we manage waste and use antibiotics today shapes the health of our community tomorrow.

The good news? We can act. Proper waste segregation, responsible antibiotic use, and good hygiene go a long way in keeping these threats at bay.
