Local autonomy does not mean going it alone.

A historical study tracing over 400 years of Baptist history shows that local church independence has always been paired with voluntary cooperation and shared mission. From the Philadelphia Baptist Association in 1707 to the American Baptist Churches USA (ABCUSA) and the Convention of Philippine Baptist Churches (CPBC), the principle remains the same: self-governance within a covenantal relationship, not isolation.

The study draws powerful lessons for the CPBC, especially when viewed through Filipino values like bayanihan and the barangay spirit. True autonomy, as the researcher puts it, is not absolute independence. It is interdependence rooted in the body of Christ.

As Baptist churches in the Philippines navigate their own path, the call is clear: balance, contextualize, and connect. Strengthen organizational structure without weakening local churches. Honor autonomy while building unity.
